The 91-feet high piece made of iron does not go unnoticed.\u00a0It is located at the crossroads of Reforma Avenue, one of the main avenues in downtown Mexico City.<\/p>\n<p><strong>But is this enormous\u00a0horse head art or has a practical use?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The sculpture was <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=-FClzdUtcRE\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>built in 1990<\/strong><\/a> and has a double function: it is an art piece, but it also serves as a vent for drainage.<\/p>\n<p>The inhabitants of Mexico City are no strangers to artistic display on the streets of this great metropolis. One of them is <em>Cabeza de Caballo<\/em>, better known as <em>El Caballito<\/em>, by Mexican artist <a href=\"http:\/\/sebastianmexico.com\/cv.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Enrique Carbajal<\/strong><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Pre-Columbian civilizations\u00a0such as the Olmecs built colosal\u00a0heads carved from single blocks or boulders of volcanic\u00a0basalt.<\/p>\n<p>The Olmecs were the first major civilization in Mexico.\u00a0A couple of the 17 found\u00a0<em>Cabezas Olmecas<\/em> (Olmec Heads),\u00a0weighing about 20 tons each, are in exhibit in the Anthropology National Museum in Mexico City.<\/p>\n<h3>El Caballito-style\u00a0sculptures around the world<\/h3>\n<p>Carbajal, better known as <a href=\"http:\/\/sebastianmexico.com\/_obra\/obra.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Sebastian<\/strong><\/a>, is originally from the northern state of Chihuahua, where several of his monumental sculptures are exhibited in public places. His sculptures are also in <a href=\"http:\/\/sebastianmexico.com\/_obra\/monumental\/monumental.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>other cities<\/strong><\/a> in Mexico.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/sebastianmexico.com\/_obra\/mextranjero\/monumental%20EXT.html\" target=\"_blank\"><strong>Outside Mexico<\/strong><\/a>, Sebastian&#8217;s sculptures can be found in Latin American cities such as Buenos Aires, Argentina; Havana, Cuba; Montevideo, Uruguay; and Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.<\/p>\n<p>Other\u00a0of his sculptures are located in Albuquerque, New Mexico; Denver, Colorado; New York, and Osaka, Japan among others.<\/p>\n<p>Not only are sculptures big and tall in Mexico City, there are also huge and beautiful buildings. The Torre Latinoamericana (Latin American Tower), with a height of almost 600 feet, \u00a0is one of the best <a href=\"http:\/\/www.azultourquesa.com\/EN\/mexicos-best-lookouts\/\"><strong>lookouts<\/strong><\/a> in the city.<\/p>\n<p>Few views are as spectacular as those at the top of the skyscrapers.\u00a0Even colossal sculptures such as those of the sculptor Sebastian look very small from the heights.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>El Caballito (Horse Head)\u00a0is a sculpture hard to miss.
